Valentines Day

The one day of the year where people in relationships are pressured to show each other how much they care, by using other people’s words in cards and an array of gifts shoved in our faces in every shop.

I have always found that the couples who splash out on extravagant gifts, take photos, upload them to the internet, tag each other and do soppy status updates are the ones with the most problems. What is it inside of us that feels the need to share these special moments with the world? I wouldn’t say romance is dead, in fact it is alive more than ever, but its no longer intimate; it seems unless its shared with everyone it means nothing.

Don’t get me wrong, we are all guilty of putting things online and wanting people to know what we’re doing - I may be one of the worst considering how many followers I have on here and how much I use Twitter and Facebook, but I feel there is something fundamentally wrong with couples who can’t just spend this day together, alone. No tweeting what they are having for dinner, no pictures of the roses they’ve just received. Every valentines day I’ve spent with a boyfriend, the last thing on my mind was letting my facebook friends know how ‘happy’ we are.

“I love you so much and this day is so perfect, but let me just put it in a facebook status instead of telling you to your face”

I rest my case.

Anyway, happy valentines day everyone, I’ve got a dissertation to write.
